Bankers, engineers and human resource professionals will all be on Capitol Hill this week. More than a dozen groups are holding fly-ins or legislative conferences this week before Congress takes a two-week recess over the Passover and Easter holidays.
The American Bankers Association is asking Congress to "please support America's hometown banks." About 1,100 people are expected for the annual Government Relations Summit. Talking points include creating a level playing field for all financial institutions, and ending tax-exemptions for competitors such as credit unions.
About 200 HR professionals will be talking to Congress about employment issues, including changing the definition of a full-time employee under the Affordable Care Act to 40 hours a week, from 30 hours, and improving the E-Verify system for checking the legal status of new hires. SHRM is hosting a welcome reception for its Employment Law and Legislative Conference tonight at the National Museum of Natural History.
The National Association of Chain Drug Stores expects more than 350 advocates for its RxIMPACT Day on Capitol Hill. Industry trade publication Drug Store News produced a special edition for participants to take on their visits to congressional offices, highlighting the role of pharmacists in health care.
Other fly-ins and legislative conferences include: American Society of Civil Engineers, National Association for Home Care & Hospice, Council of Chief State School Officers, National Association of State Treasurers, United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, National Cattlemen's Beef Association, U.S. Travel Association, Society for Neuroscience and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin.
Three trade groups in the building sector are joining together for a legislative conference this week: the National Lumber and Building Material Dealers Association, Northeast Window & Door Association and the Window & Door Manufacturers Association.
